National Trails Day- June 7, 2008
National Trails Day was officially celebrated by Door County Silent Sports Alliance with a gathering at Potawatomi State Park Saturday.
Participants Larry Fish, Dean Watkins, Tom Parsons, Bill Parsons, Karl Schroeder, Carmen Schroeder, Marsha Nebel- Schwartz, Paul Neuville, Phillip Anschutz, Paul Anschutz, Ericka Schroeder, Chesla Anschutz, Bruce Anschutz and Jake Cummings enjoyed road and mountain bike riding, Potawatomi Park hiking trails and a picnic lunch served afterwards. DCSSA member Kathy Birmingham, husband Thad and daughter Meridith delivered food and drinks,
while celebrated grill master Larry Fish utilized his food preparation talent.

The weather was cooperative, greeting road riders with one of the warmest days of the year, while Southern Door County roads offered an excellent oppurtunity for cyclists to enjoy a 35 mile ride on National Trails Day. The extensive Potawatomi Park trail system was enjoyed by hikers and mountain bikers alike. Ann Wertz and Betty Parsons, two of the hiker component, noted how fortuitous they were to have a 1200 acre park and recreational area so close to home. "Growing up in a suburb of Chicago I traveled to Door County on countless vacations," Ann remarked. "Living in Sturgeon Bay, I'm now only a 5 minute drive from a nature hike at Potawatomi Park."

In spirit with National Trails Day, Tom Parsons was thanked by the group for the countless hours he has spent creating and maintaining xc ski and mountain bike trails at Cherry Hills Nordic Center.

National Trails Day biking and hiking Saturday ride was the first of many future events DCSSA will coordinate. "As the group gathers more members and blossoms into a well known community resource, it is Door County Silent Sports Alliance desire to acquaint county residents with the silent sports lifestyle thru frequently scheduled activities and education," Larry Fish, DCSSA member, remarked.
